Boating season is here! Whether you’re cruising on a lake, heading to the beach, or spending weekends on the water, make sure your coverage fits your boat and how you use it.

Accident Documentation Checklist

1) At the scene (safety first)

• Check for injuries; call 911 if anyone is hurt

• Move to a safe location if possible (turn on hazard lights)

• If safe, set up warning triangles/flares

• Do not admit fault

2) Gather driver & vehicle information

• Names of all drivers/occupants involved

• Insurance company name(s)

• Policy/insurance card info (or photos of cards)

• Driver’s license info (if available)

• Vehicle year/make/model

• License plate numbers

• Contact information (phone/email) for other drivers and witnesses

3) Photos & video (take before vehicles are moved if safe)

• All vehicle damage (wide + close-up angles)

• Entire scene showing positions of vehicles

• Traffic signs, lights, lane markings, and street names

• Road conditions (potholes, debris, weather, skid marks)

• Any skid marks/braking distance evidence

• Damage to other property (guardrails, poles, fences, etc.)

• Injuries visible (only if appropriate—do what’s safe and respectful)

4) Witness information

• Names + phone/email of witnesses

• Brief statement of what they saw (write it down)

5) Collect official/response details

• Police report number (if one is requested/issued)

• Officer name/badge number (if available)

• Tow information (if towed) + receipt/contact info

• EMS/hospital info if medical treatment was received

• Any citation or incident report details

6) Record key facts (write immediately)

• Date and time of accident

• Location/address/intersection

• Weather and lighting conditions

• What happened (short, factual timeline—no opinions)

• Road direction of travel for each vehicle

• Any safety devices in use (seat belts, airbags deployed)

7) Keep receipts & notes

• Tow/transport receipts

• Rental car or ride-share receipts (if approved/needed)

• Medical bills and pharmacy receipts

• Out-of-pocket expenses (parking, mileage, etc.)

• Save any repair estimates you receive

8) Report the claim

• Contact your insurer as soon as possible

• Provide collected documentation (photos, report number, witness info)

• Ask about next steps for repairs, inspections, and medical documentation

Over the years, my commitment to service has been recognized with multiple honors, including the Ambassador Travel Award 12 times and the Bronze Tablet Award every year as an agent.

Outside the office, I enjoy golf, fishing, volunteering in the community, and horseback riding. I’ve been happily married to my wife, Kelly, for more than 36 years, and we’re proud parents of four accomplished children who have built meaningful careers across Washington, DC and Los Angeles.
